Introduction: After not logging too many miles in the Topo Athletic Magnifly last year, they’ve quickly developed into my go-to shoe for 2016. The first 4 or 5 runs in the Magnifly weren’t that electrifying to be honest – I loved the fit, but the shoe just felt way too stiff and clunky. However, somewhere around the 50 mile mark, something clicked with the shoe and I haven’t looked back. I’m guessing the dual-density midsole took some time to break in, but now that it’s broken in, I’m really enjoying the cushioned, responsive ride.
Pros:
- Weight – under 9 oz for such a well-cushioned shoe is pretty impressive.
- Fit – I love the roomy toe box, and the snug midfoot/heel holds everything in place.
- Cushion – always a pleasant ride, although if you’re looking for a soft, spongy shoe, the Magnifly isn’t for you.
- Durability – no issues whatsoever after 260+ miles. The outsole is holding up really well, and the upper, despite some creasing at the front of the shoe, is still looking good.
- Price – $110 is a fair price for a quality shoe, especially when I’m expecting to log 500+ miles in it. (Note: check the Amazon.com widget below for the latest best Magnifly prices.)
Cons:
- Looks – not the sexiest shoe in my closet, but fit and function is far more important.
- Upper – lots going on with the numerous overlays and the toe bumper is just a little too hard for my taste.
- Break-in period – it’s been awhile since I’ve owned a shoe that needed to be broken in. I’m just glad I persevered with the Magnifly beyond that initial magic 50 mile mark.

Summary: As stated above, the Magnifly has become my go-to shoe for 2016, and with 20+ shoes in my current rotation, that should speak volumes. I’m almost positive I’ll be wearing the Magnifly at the Iron Horse 100 next month too – they should provide just the right amount of cushion coupled with ample room in the toe box for 100 miles of racing.
