2026 One City Marathon Week 8: Why I Withdrew

Well, not quite the update I’d hoped to be writing!

After several months of dealing with proximal hamstring tendinopathy, I’ve made the difficult decision to withdraw from the 2026 One City Marathon.

I’d been hoping the hamstring would improve enough to continue training, but recovery has been slower than expected. As frustrating as it is to miss a race, there’s little point forcing the issue and potentially making things worse.

I briefly considered switching to the Shamrock Marathon, but realistically, that would still be too soon. The tendon needs more time to settle, and I need to be confident I can handle the training before tackling another 26.2 miles.

So, what’s next?

The new target is the Tidewater Striders Spring Marathon on April 26th. That gives me a little more breathing room to continue rehabilitation, rebuild my training and hopefully arrive at the start line in reasonable shape.

It’s certainly not how I imagined this marathon build-up ending, but sometimes the sensible decision is to change the plan rather than stubbornly stick with it.

Adjust, adapt, keep moving forward.
