Today, February 29th, is that weird extra day that comes around once every four years. Why not make the most of it and boost your monthly mileage total?
With a 5k planned for Saturday morning, I decided on a nice easy early morning run to give myself at least 24 hours to recover and prepare for the race. It was one of those crisp, frosty, calm mornings that are ideal for running and always seem to set you up for the day.
Temperature was in the low 30’s, but as I mentioned above, there was little to no wind. Suitably dressed (shorts, long sleeve “Nightlite” top, hat and gloves) I left the house and set off feeling pretty good. Usually on a morning run, I’m a little sore and stiff, but today my legs felt great from the start.
The first mile came in at 7:37, followed by a speedier 7:07. I made a small loop around a parking lot to tag on an extra half mile before heading for home into a chilly 6 mph breeze. The third mile was slightly quicker (6:59) and I was able to maintain a similar speed for the last full mile (7:01) before coasting home at sub-7 minute pace.
Total distance: 4.65 miles
Average pace: 7:09/mile
Feeling good and it’s great to get the daily run out of the way early. Time to start thinking about a goal for tomorrow’s 5k….
