Practicing The Warm Up

Didn’t want to do too much after yesterday’s “tremendous run“, so decided to just head to the local soccer fields and practice my race warm up routine and do a few strength/core exercises. I’ll spare you the full details of the warm up (or maybe I just don’t want to tell you in case it turns into a secret weapon of mine), but it includes stretches, lunges and 3 or 4 minutes of skipping.

I also ran several laps around the perimeter of the field, stopping every 3/4 mile or so to do sets of 8 pull-ups (yes, I’m getting stronger), 20 push-ups and 20 crunches. I’m finding this to be a great way of killing two birds with one stone and mixing up my routines a little bit. One thing I discovered tonight though; don’t do crunches on the grass without wearing a shirt. For some reason I’ve developed a nasty rash on my back – not sure if it was the coarseness of the grass or possibly some sort of chemical that the ground may have recently been treated with. Live and learn I guess…

The lunges and skipping are definitely getting easier, but now I’ve done the workout, I’m not sure tonight was the best time to practice the race warm up routine. My legs feel heavy, my groin is a bit sore and there’s only 36 hours until the CHKD RunWalk for the Kids 8k. Not so smart move Steve. Time for an ice bath I think….

Stats: 5.5 miles in about 44 minutes. Skipping definitely slows you down!
