Another week over, another week to review. Here it is:
- Monday – quite a busy start to the week, with an easy 4 mile before work, brisk 7 miles in the middle of the day and a one hour spin on the bike trainer. Fitted in some core & push-ups work too.
- Tuesday – started the day with a 1.5 mile morning stroll to stretch the legs after Monday’s workouts. Continued the recovery with an “easy” 8 miles. The pace at 7:03/mile was a bit brisk for a recovery though – need to pay more attention to that in future.
- Wednesday – 3 easy miles before work, with another round of 1/2 mile on, 1/2 mile offs later in the day. Faster than last week. Hope I can log more improvement next week too.
- Thursday – started off the day with a humid 4 miles. Legs felt weary but I guess that’s to be expected as I rebuild my fitness. No injury issues anyway, which is such a good feeling! Lunch time I ran another 8 miles – slightly quicker than planned yet again. Also went for my first swim in months. Managed 800 yards before being asked to leave the pool as they were switching from “lap swim” to “kiddie swim”. Oh well, better luck next time…
- Friday – easy [but humid] 3 miles to Starbucks for my usual oatmeal & coffee treat. Nice to sit outside and watch the world go by – great start to the day! Mid-morning I logged some more 100 pushups and 200 situps, before heading out at lunch time for a sockless 4 miler. Pace was good and I threw in a few 100m strides for good measure. Had some spare time after work, so hopped on the bike trainer for another hour of easy spinning. The Breezy Point Triathlon is fast approaching!
- Saturday – Saturday morning was a race morning and the good old Elizabeth River Run 10k. I finished in a respectable 36:56 [met my goal from last week’s blog post] to take the 2nd place Masters Award. I ran fairly strong for 5 miles, but my lack of fitness kicked in with one mile to go and I crumbled slightly – the legs just wouldn’t turn over any quicker. My time was still one second faster than the 2011 event, so I guess I shouldn’t be too displeased with the performance. With the short warm up/cool down, logged almost 10 miles for the day.
- Sunday – another 13 mile effort to round off the running week. Quite hot and humid, but it was nice to run without a Garmin for a change. Think I’ll do more of that during the summer months…. The final workout of the week was a 1000 yard swim, broke up into 4 x 250yd efforts. Nice and relaxed, and the cool water felt very refreshing after the hot run.
So, the comeback continues with a 71 mile running week and a few bike/swim workouts thrown in too. Naturally, my anticipated “down” week didn’t happen, but with the legs still feeling good I decided to just keep logging the miles so long as anything didn’t start hurting. Managed to log over 200 miles this month, which is the first time since January I’ve managed to do that. Would love to hit 300 in months to come, but we’ll see how that goes as we make our way through the warmer months. Thanks for reading – I appreciate all the comments and support!
You do triathlons too? I knew you biked but didn’t know you competed in Tris. Very cool! Great job at the 10K and I love the picture!
Thanks, Kris. I’ll never be competitive in triathlons – purely for fun. ERR was enjoyable. We’re lucky to have such great local races and a wonderful community of runners. Keep up the good work yourself!
Great week, man!! Do you have a set training schedule, or do you just go for a light run in the morning and the run again later in the day saving the “long” run for the weekend? Fantastic 70 miles!
Thanks, Joshua. To be honest, I just make up the training as I go along – I *have* followed rigid training plans in the past, but prefer the flexibility of “doing my own thing”. A typical week is made up of a bit of tempo, a mid-week progressive and a weekend longish run. I like to race most weekends too, so the rest of the week is just easy, recovery running. If I’m feeling weak/tired I’ll back off for a day or two, but generally I just decide on a day-to-day basis what run I’ll tackle. Happy Miles, Steve!
