87 miles last week – highest of the year so far. Here’s how the new week went….
- Monday – “zapped the zero” with a longer-than-usual Monday 10 miler. Debated whether to hit the track for some intervals, but settled for some nice solo recovery miles instead. Hottest run for a while though as the temps were still in the mid-80s.
- Tuesday – hopped on the bike trainer for a high intensity 30 minute lunch time spin. Planned to run another 8-10 miler after work, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. Just a short distance from the house I realized I was very low on energy, so turned around after half a mile and headed home. Can’t remember the last time I bailed on a run, but it was definitely the right thing to do.
- Wednesday – felt much better strength-wise than Tuesday, so jumped on the treadmill during lunch for some up and down incline work. Felt good; just a little niggle in the left IT.
- Thursday – made the most of a nice, cool morning by running an easy 5 before work. Followed up the 5 with some more incline work on the ‘mill. Quads definitely got a workout, and thankfully no niggles with the IT today.
- Friday – yep, you guessed it; short run to Starbucks for my oatmeal/coffee breakfast. Great start to the day! Also enjoyed a swift six miler at lunch in my new Saucony Kinvara 3s. First impressions = excellent!
- Saturday – fun day at the races! Ran the local CHKD RunWalk for the Kids 8K. Finished the race in 28:36 – my 3rd fastest 8K ever – with a solid 6th overall/1st age-group placing. The finish time/pace was unexpected and gives me some confidence that things are getting back to normal. Almost 10 miles for the day with the cool down/warm up.
- Sunday – no 20 miler this weekend, just a pleasant 13 at First Landing State Park with dailymiler David S. Took in the main trail, Osmanthus and Kingfisher/White Lake trails. Fun stuff on a beautiful morning.
So, almost 60 miles for the week, and another solid race performance – happy with that. Next weekend is the OSS/CIA 50 Mile Night Run – a fun-looking Ultra that I am TOTALLY unprepared for. Goal for the race is to finish, have fun and enjoy the night time trails. With my recent erratic training I can’t expect anything else from the event, so I’ll definitely be looking to dial down the early pace and not get sucked into racing people I shouldn’t be racing. I really need to be smart for once. We’ll see…
