With one thing and another, May turned out to be a very low mileage month for me (107.6 to be exact). I’ve promised myself June will be better and convinced myself I probably needed a bit of a break after the Frederick Marathon anyway.
Speaking of Frederick, it’s hard to believe it was only four weeks ago that I ran my second best marathon time ever. So much seems to have happened since the race and I’m definitely ready to start thinking about my next marathon effort – the Richmond Marathon on November 15th.
Also speaking of Frederick, it was great to receive a $300 check in the mail today for my shock third place marathon finish. I was beginning to think it was all a dream or they’d forgotten to mail the prize money. Not sure what I’m going to do with the money at the moment. I guess I could always upgrade my Garmin 305 GPS unit to the latest 405 model? I’ve also considered investing my winnings in a 20-week Custom McMillan Training Program for the Richmond Marathon. I’m not getting any younger and this could be my last big push for a sub-2:50 marathon! I may just bank the money and save it for a rainy day. Who knows….
Anyway, onto today’s run, my first since Thursday of last week. Due to a flying visit to the UK on Friday afternoon I haven’t had chance to do any exercise at all for 3 days (unless you can count walking up and down airport terminals), so it was great to get outside after work and record a steady nine mile run in the sun and fresh air.
After a slowish start I gradually picked up the pace and finished with an average speed of 7:09 per mile, which in all honesty was quite comfortable. Now we’re in a new month I’m looking to increase my base mileage, run a few short races and get ready to start a new marathon training program in 3 or 4 weeks time. Exciting times and the current spell of pleasant weather is definitely a great motivator for me.
